Sustainable Brides: Jessica

The Sustainable Brides series showcases and inspires subscribers in our community in a way that we haven’t quite seen before. Style Theory may have created a sustainable platform for many brides-to-be to rent outfits for their wedding shoots. To kick start this series, we met with a fun-loving bride-to-be who chose fun and comfort over glamour for her pre-wedding shoot.

Meet Jessica:

Hi Jessica, thank you for taking the time for this interview. Congratulations on your engagement! What made you decide to rent the clothes for your engagement shoot?

There’s a long story to this which I’m not proud to share, but renting wasn’t actually the first thing I thought of. I thought Taobao would be the way to go because I thought I could get them for cheap, since this was a one-time occasion. Back in March, a friend of mine offered to Taobao clothes for me which turned out to be my biggest wedding mistake, as the clothes I got didn’t fit me well. It was a waste of money and wardrobe space! After that, I didn’t want to get new clothes for my shoot anymore, and looked to renting as a better option.

How did you find out about Style Theory?

I think it was through an Instagram ad! After downloading and browsing through the app, as well as reading a few reviews here and there, I thought it was the perfect option for me.

How did your fiancé and family react to your decision to rent?

Both my fiancé and my mom thought it was a brilliant idea because I didn’t have to make space for new clothes in my wardrobe, which was already so full. My fiancé actually wished there was a Style Theory for men!

Was there any theme or inspiration behind your engagement shoot?

I don’t think there was a theme per se, but we did want it to represent us – something that is not too cheesy, something casual, something fun and memorable. We also didn’t want it to be overly posed so we let our photographer decide the visual direction for the shoot!

Could you describe your process of choosing the dresses for the shoot?

Oh, this was a really easy process for me because I had a very hands on photographer! He put together a moodboard for us with his team that showed the looks we were going for. All I had to do was go on the Style Theory app to find outfits that looked similar, so kudos to them!

Any special moments from the shoot?

Lots of laughing! The both of us realised that being a model is no easy job!

Sustainability

Renting your dress instead of buying can be seen as a sustainable choice. Is  sustainability something that’s important to you?

To be really honest, sustainability wasn’t in my wardrobe vocabulary before this. I’ve always thought having more clothes meant more options so I would never run out of clothes to wear, but as it turns out, I was wrong! I still ran out of clothes to wear despite having a closet full of clothes.

Is sustainability something you plan on incorporating into other aspects of your life?

Yes, of course! I’ve been wanting to rent every single thing ever since! I’m currently in the midst of looking for heels for my wedding, and I don’t wear heels very often. I’ve been hoping that someone would come up with a shoe-rental business.

Do you see more brides being interested in renting their dresses instead of buying?

I think so! Unless they have an unlimited wardrobe space or foresee themselves re-wearing the pieces again. If not, renting is a much better option.

Style Theory

How would you describe your personal style?

Girly, but not too girly. My style’s also pretty relaxed and casual.

You’ve been a subscriber since May this year. What are your top 3 hits about Style Theory’s service?

The app is easy to use and navigate. The subscription plans are affordable and there’s a wide variety of clothing choices for all events.

Has Style Theory changed your shopping habits in any way?

Yes! Like I said earlier, I’ve been wanting to rent every single thing ever since, from shoes to bags and gowns etc.

What would you like to see more of from Style Theory?

Perhaps a men’s line? My fiancé wished he could have rented his outfit for the pre-wedding shoot too. Maybe Style Theory can branch into shoe rental as well! I’d love to rent my wedding heels. You guys can cater to a wider size range too, I’d love for bigger ladies, like my mom, to fit in!

Style Theory is all about style- and self-exploration, accepting that we’re all a work-in-progress, and being open to surprises and new discoveries. Were there any times during your subscription that you felt closest to what the brand stood for?

In a way, yes – I love how Style Theory offers subscribers the option to try outfits at a low cost without committing. This allows people like myself to try new styles without buying and regretting afterwards.

Last but not least, any tips for brides-to-be who are in the midst of planning for their pre-wedding shoots?

  1. Find a really good photographer! Someone who’s able to capture raw and real moments, who can make you guys feel relaxed, is easy to talk to and shares the same creative vision for your photos. I’ll be happy to help if you need any wedding related contacts!
  2. Wear comfortable clothes – something easy to move and walk in!
  3. SMILE and don’t forget to have fun!
