How to take that Vogue-worthy OOTD in 3 easy steps

In this age of social proof, it’s one thing to rent beautiful designer outfits and it’s another to snap a pic of it. We consulted with OOTD experts to find out how to take a good OOTD for the ‘Gram. Read on for three tips that will help you take your OOTD game to the next level.

OOTD #1: It’s All About the Lighting

Light is undoubtedly the best beauty product you don’t have to pay for. There is nothing worse than having a huge shadow cast over your face. Good lighting can actually make undereye circles and shadows totally disappear.

Indoors:

Choose a nice space with natural sunlight streaming in. Turn toward a window with natural light! If you’re doing a waist-up OOTD or selfie, you might want to consider holding up a piece of white paper below the camera view to bounce the light off and illuminate the face. It also reduces the double-chin effect!

Take It Outdoors:

The best OOTDs bask in the sun’s glow (golden hour: sunrise and sunset) when the light is low and have either very interesting backgrounds or really, really simple ones. It’s not that easy to achieve a good outdoor OOTD but when you choose the right lighting and background, it’s a sure-win.

Tip: It also helps to wear outfits and makeup colours that flatter your skin tone. Good lighting will show off your best features the same way it can also highlight your flaws.

OOTD #2: Play To Your Angles

Avoid looking directly full on or stare into the camera. Here are some quick tips to find your best angle(s):

  1. Keep your chin down
  2. Hold the camera up high
  3. Turn to your side just slightly, but not where it’s a full-on profile

Tip: Our OOTD insider shares that you can film your OOTD or selfie session instead of taking standard photos. Record it on video mode while varying your poses. After a minute or two of this, you can go through the video and freeze a frame with the best angle. Our advice? You should only probably attempt it if you have time to spare.

OOTD #3: Give Natural Expressions

Expressions look best when they’re fresh.

  1. Inhale just as you hit the shutter for lightly parted lips and a relaxed expression
  2. Keep your eyes shut until the moment before you take the shot
  3. Flash a real smile–a trying-too-hard selfie will never be a good one
  4. Try smiling with your eyes ANTM style–you might want to practice in front of the mirror until you get it right

Other OOTD tips:

Don’t Overedit

While we love Instagram’s Valencia filter, it could be easier to edit from the right app (find out the top photo editing apps we use) or take a photo from a good camera-phone mode! Just don’t adjust to the point that it looks unnatural.

Tip: With all filters, reduce the severity and not use it at max capacity. It’ll make your OOTD appear a little less edited.
